Type Fun's Top 200 Enchantments: Part IV

#192: Mortal Combat
Not too many enchantments get their own theme songs. What's not like about a card that wins you the game you the game when you dump a bunch of cards into your graveyard? And by that, I don't mean that it does something so powerful that you'll basically win the game. It literally wins you the game. It says so right on the card. Seven enchantments contain the phrase "win the game."Mortal Combat ranks the lowest out of them on this list even though it's the only black one (black being my favorite color in Magic) because it constrains your deck, forcing you to use a lot of creatures. It's also vulnerable to things like Tormod's Crypt and Planar Void. But it's still a cool card and one could easily build a deck around it. Dumping your library into your graveyard can be easy. Some day I'll make a post about different ways to do it.

#191: Carnival of Souls
Carnival of Souls, somewhat unfairly, has a reputation as a bad card. I've seen it maligned by many people independently, often knowledgeable players. One guy likened it to "tapping your City of Brass and taking the mana burn." But it not only made our list of the top 200 enchantments, it actually made it in above nine other cards. How? Well, the way I see it is that it's obvious that Carnival of Souls has a potent effect, but the criticism is that the drawback is too harsh for any other cards to come along and "break" it. Most people seem to agree with that. The thing is that it's already happened and most players simply don't know it, because the old Type 1.5, before the format change in 2004, was unpopular and largely ignored. There the combination of Skullclamp, Carnival of Souls, and the Kobolds formed a potent card-drawing engine for a vicious combo deck.
